Olive Harvest 2019

A very successful olive harvest in the sunshine during October 2018 and one of our best tasting organic extra virgin olive oils, the Summer of 2018 was hot and dry, the olive trees produced a smaller quantity of olives but the quality is very high.

Summer

As Northern Europeans we always greet this season with eager anticipation, the days are longer, the temperature is rising and we wait for the call of our favourite bird the beautiful Hoopoe to signal the start of Summer, closely followed by the happy and lively bee-eaters. When the morning air is filled with birdsong and smells of Acacia and olive blossom, roses,jasmine and freshly cut grass it seems to make it so much easier to get up early and face the day ahead!

The Olive Harvest – Autumn 2015

The 2015 Olive Harvest was a great success, after a long hot summer watching the olives slowly develop and ripen we couldn't wait to get started. We enjoyed hand picking the olives with a mixed age group of hard working friends in the late October sunshine.  Everyone enthusastically turned up each morning eager to lay nets, pick and fill the crates with shiny green and black olives, even youngest pickers (8 and 11 years) relished climbing the trees to help knock the olives down into the net...

Balloons over the Frantoio – 20 Sep 2015

What a wonderful sight in the valley below - Lucca balloon club flew lots of balloons past the Frantoio this morning. We were very interested to discover that the famous aeronaut/balloonist Vincenzio Lunardi who was born in Lucca in 1759 made the first aerial flight in Scotland - 46 miles from Edinburgh to Fife.

The New Oil Experience ( visit us in November 2015)

Italians say olio nuovo, vino vecchio: new oil, old wine. Unlike wine, extra virgin olive oil does not improve with age. On the contrary, olio nuovo, the first oil of the season, is the most highly-prized.
